LOW GIRL HANDBRAKE

Low Girl share a glimpse of their debut album with leading single ‘Handbrake’. The quartet - which initially began as a solo project from front-woman Sarah Cosgrove - have coasted upon a string of earlier single releases, earning them recognition among indie circles and support slots for the likes of Swim Deep and The Murder Capital. As they gear up to release their debut LP Is It Too Late To Freak Out?, they share ‘Handbrake’ — a culmination of dreamy instrumentation levelled by Cosgrove’s clear, lucid vocals. There’s a sheen to the way that the electric guitar melodies intertwine against a gentle percussive trod, with the track embracing simplicity and consistency over dramatic swells. Meanwhile, the lyrics hold the pressure, as Cosgrove sings: ‘Running from the things that I am running from/I know, it’s wrong/Yeah, I think that this is the beginning of the end/Let’s go’. Like its namesake, ‘Handbrake’ holds tension with quiet grace. It’s a promising prelude to the emotional release still to come. -Kayla Sandiford
